Collage Tanzania Park in Jenfeld

The Tanzania Park* in Jenfeld. Colonial heritage in the east of Hamburg.

Symposium on 13.10.
Under the title "Of monuments and resistance: the invisible side of history", we invite you to workshops, lectures and discussions in Jenfeld.

Hidden behind high fences, unrecognizable from the outside. It is hidden between trees and bushes in the east of Hamburg. It has no official name, hardly anyone in the district knows it and it is not on the Jenfeld city map. And yet there it is, the "Tanzania Park", as it is colloquially known. But what is behind the name and the fence?

Together with neighbors, we want to go in search of colonial traces and ask: How can a district deal with its colonial heritage? And what parts of history does the park conceal? Experts from Hamburg and Tanzania will be on hand to help us get to the bottom of these questions.

We see our project as open-ended, we want to give every perspective space and a voice and learn, discuss and think about the future of the Jenfeld district together. Our project thrives on your participation.

The name "Tanzania Park" raises many critical questions, especially about its origins and the actors involved. The fact that it was chosen without involving Tanzanian partners or members of the Tanzanian diaspora in Germany raises legitimate concerns. In addition, the name has a colonial connotation. This can be perceived as offensive.

Despite these concerns and criticisms, the term "Tanzania Park" will continue to be used as a proper noun in this context in order to emphasize its importance in the current debate and to promote discussion about the need for sensitive and respectful naming in the public perception.

In addition, the name is used in the district and is colloquially understood as such. For the sake of simplicity, we have therefore decided to continue using the term as an auxiliary term, but remain open to alternative suggestions. The term is representative of the processual nature of our project.
